Rodents

RodentsThe most common signs of rats and mice are the evidence they leave behind, such as burrows, fecal droppings, tracks, chewed out holes in walls, chewed wires, urine stains and nesting materials. Rodents are more likely to be seen or heard shortly after dark and in the early morning.  The holes that rats chew in walls tend to be the size of a tennis ball (about 2” to 3” diameter)

Rats
Brown rats are the most common, weighing over half a kilo and measuring about 23cm, not including the tail.  The brown rat stays near ground level while the black rat is more agile and often enters upper floors of buildings.

They gnaw to help keep their constantly growing teeth worn down.  They damage woodwork, lead pipes and plastic and can sometimes strip insulation from electrical cables.

Rats are capable of spreading many diseases from their filthy surroundings such as sewers and refuse tips and contaminate more food and water than they consume.  They leave droppings behind as evidence and can usually be seen or heard shortly after dark and in the early morning.

Mice
Mice seek the shelter of buildings for nesting and food, especially in the winter months.  They can climb well and can squeeze through very small gaps.

They gnaw on electric cables, water and gas pipes, packaging and woodwork.  They also contaminate more food than they eat and deposit 70 droppings in 24 hours, on average and urinates frequently to mark its territory.
